Clayton Lefthand, a member of the Stoney Sioux First Nations, was hired as a film liaison on location in Alberta, Canada’s Stoney Indian Reserve. From June 17 to September 8, 2002, filming took place.
Because Costner disliked any of the existing towns, the production spent over a million dollars to construct one from scratch. They had to spend $40,000 to construct a route to get to this place since it was so isolated from civilization. On the set, 225 head of cattle were handled by professional cowboys.
